From a curator: "The Special Collections Research Center’s (SCRC) strengths are many and varied, with curation distributed across 3 full-time curators based within the department, as well as 5 “adjunct curators” who are subject specialist librarians with primary appointments in the Research Division, but who also hold curatorial responsibilities for specific areas within Special Collections. You can read about some, although by no means all, of our collecting foci on this page. The Joseph A. Labadie Collection is perhaps the largest collection and one of the most heavily researched. The archives of screenwriters such as Orson Welles and Robert Altman have also been heavily researched in recent years. And within my own curatorial responsibilities (books post-1700 + various archival collections), the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive is one that I especially enjoy and which is frequently drawn upon for class visits."

From a librarian: "The Clements Library's traditional strength has been in Revolutionary War collections. We hold the papers of British General Thomas Gage, who was commander-in-chief of the British forces in America from 1762-1775; Henry Clinton, who was commander-in-chief of the British forces from 1778-1782; and William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, British politician and Prime Minister during the Revolution. These collections formed the cornerstone of the Clements Library when we first opened in 1923. Since then, we have collected widely in American history through 1900, with strengths in anti-slavery and abolition, Caribbean history, Native American history, and African-American history. I catalog maps, and that is my favorite area of the collection - hand-drawn maps of the American Revolution, and early sea charts of the coasts are particular favorites!"
